I personally love long hair. I love the way it hangs along the back and looks moisturized and well groomed. But how do I ensure that my hair maintains the nurtured, healthy look and most important of all – how do I ensure that my hair keeps getting longer and keeps growing properly without the ends breaking? Protective styling is the answer!
Protective styling is basically wearing your hair in a way where your ends are tucked away – for example by braiding it or putting it in a bun. Wearing your hair loose on a daily basis is not good for your strands and will eventually set its tracks and lead to dryness and breakage. The ends of your hair are the oldest and most fragile part of the strand, and therefore they need a lot of attention and care to prevent them from splitting and breaking. Washing, styling, blow drying, and detangling your hair all requires harsh pulling, which will weaken your hair and in worst cases cause the ends to break.
In this blog post I have gathered 5 reasons why protective styling should become your best friend and how it will help you retain length and moisture.
WHY PROTECTIVE STYLING?
Prevents your ends from breaking
When you put your hair up and off of your shoulders you prevent your strands from getting into sliding frictions with the fabric of your clothes. This is not only an issue during the day, but the night time during your sleep can also be really rough on your hair. Even though sleeping seems like the most peaceful thing, you don’t totally know what is going on after shutting your eyes. The uncontrolled tossing and turning can create damaging frictions on your hair which eventually will cause the ends to break. A tip is to tie it back in a loose braid in the neck and make sure the hair tie isn’t too tight. In that way you tuck the ends away and protect them from breaking.
Keeps your hair moisturized
Protective styling also helps the hair staying moisturized. If you often wear your hair down and loose it gets exposed to af lot of air and the hair might lose its internal moisture. By having your hair up in a protective hair-do, you lock in the moisture and protect it from drying out.
Lets your hair grow faster
The combination of protective styling and locking in moisture will in the end improve length retention. Lots of people who has made protective styling apart of their daily routine have experienced a stronger and faster hair growth. By tucking your ends away, keeping your strands from getting into frictions, locking in moisture, and protecting your hair from heated styling tools your hair will get much healthier and reward you with a better growth.
Maintains the strands cuticle thickness
Protective styling will also help you maintain the thickness of your hair. Wearing you hair down and loose exposing it to outside elements is, as earlier mentioned, really rough on your hair. Over time the cuticle thickness will decrease and cause thinness which will weaken your hair strands and possibly break them. Wearing you hair in a protective hair style will slow down the wear-and-tear process and help maintaining the cuticle thickness.
Makes you save time
Finally protective styling will also help you saving time. We have all experienced stressful mornings that gets even more stressful when you have to flat iron your hair and use lots of styling products. Protective hair-dos are easy to make and gives you the opportunity to change up and experiment with your look while your hair takes a nice break from styling tools and products.
There are a lot of benefits by wearing your hair in a protective hair style, but that doesn’t mean that wearing your hair loose once in a while isn’t okay. But give your hair what is deserves and give your ends a break for a period of time, and I promise you will be able to feel a difference!
