Hair Colour Guide

How do you colour your hair at home?

On this page, we have compiled a hair colour guide with the most important information on how to colour your hair at home.

Considerations before colouring your hair

Before you start colouring your hair, you need to find the right colour match. We've put together a small colour guide with a few tips.

Read it here: Which hair colour suits me?

Hair reacts differently to hair colour and there are many different factors at play. Therefore, you can't expect to get exactly the same result as on the outside of the box.

We therefore recommend using NATURIGIN hair colour for the following purposes:

  • Maintain your natural hair colour and cover grey hair
  • Colour your hair darker
  • Colour two to three tones lighter

Darker than your current hair colour:

If you have a choice between two hair colours, we recommend choosing the lighter of the two.

It's always easier to colour your hair darker than it is to colour it lighter.

So if you want it to be darker afterwards, you can easily use a darker colour.

It's important to remember that the lighter you colour your hair, the more the warm undertone in your hair is exposed.

Therefore, you can end up with a reddish or orange tint if you colour more than three shades lighter.

We therefore recommend going to the hairdresser if you want to make a drastic change in your hair colour, e.g. brown to light blonde.

Buy enough hair colour:

If you have thick and/or long hair, we recommend buying two boxes of hair colour. This will ensure you have enough colour for your entire head of hair and you can easily save the colour you don't use.

How to colour your hair with NATURIGIN

On this page, we have compiled a colour guide with the most important information for you.

Here is a short video showing how to colour your hair at home with NATURIGIN. It's simple and straightforward!

Colour guide

If you have thick and/or long hair, we recommend buying two boxes of hair colour. This way, you're sure to have enough colour for your entire hair and you can easily save the colour you don't use.

1. 24-48 hours before hair colouring

Before you colour your hair, perform a "patch test" to avoid unexpected allergic reactions.

  1. Use a cotton swab to apply a small amount of the product to your skin in a discreet place, such as behind your ear.
  2. You should do this with both "Colour Cream" and "Activator" without mixing them yet.
  3. After you've applied the products, simply reseal them and they're ready to use when you colour your hair.
  4. Wait 24-48 hours to see the reaction of the two products.
  5. If you see an irritation on your skin, do not continue with hair colouring.
  6. If your skin has not reacted to the sample, you can continue with hair colouring.

Note: You should not colour your hair if:

  • You have a history of facial rashes
  • You have a sensitive, irritable and damaged scalp
  • You have had a reaction after hair colouring in the past

2. Preparation for hair colouring:

Tip: If it's your first time colouring your hair at home, it's a good idea to get a friend to help you distribute the colour throughout your hair.

  1. Cover your clothes with a towel to avoid ruining your clothes
  2. Apply a thick/greasy cream at the hairline, ear and neck to protect the skin from colour splashes.
  3. Wash your hands and wear the gloves provided.
  4. Empty the tube of Colour Cream (A) into the bottle of Activator (B)
  5. Shake the contents of the bottle until the colour is completely uniform.

Note: The colour of the contents of the bottle will look different from the finished and desired hair colour.

Go to step 3 if you are going to dye your hair brown.

If you are colouring your hair for the first time, go to step 4.

3. Dyeing fades, hair previously dyed with the same colour:

  1. Start with unwashed and dry hair for best results.
  2. Apply half of the colour mixture from the Activator bottle to all of your hairline (at the roots) by parting the hair at the scalp. Make sure that all roots are covered with hair colour.
  3. Leave the mixture on for 20 minutes.
  4. Now apply the rest of the colour mixture to the rest of your hair.
  5. Leave it on for another 10 minutes.
  6. Apply a little water to make the colour mixture foam slightly, massage the hair and scalp, then rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water.

4. Colouring non-coloured hair:

  1. Start with unwashed and dry hair for best results.
  2. Start applying the colour mixture from the Activator bottle at the roots and work your way towards the ends.
  3. Massage the hair and scalp well to ensure even distribution and colouring.
  4. Let the mixture sit for 30 minutes.
  5. Apply a little water to make the colour mixture foam slightly, massage the hair and scalp, then rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water.
5. Finishing the hair colouring:
  1. Apply the contents of the "After Colour Treatment" bag (C) to your hair and massage it in.
  2. Leave on for 2 minutes and rinse your hair well.
  3. The hair colouring is now complete.

Tip: To ensure your hair stays healthy and shiny, apply conditioner right after colouring your hair. Use conditioner regularly to maintain the colour and shine. You can do this with our NATURIGIN Colour Lock Conditioner
